Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise start the divorce negotiations

Katie Holmes blindsided Tom Cruise with divorce papers a little over a week ago and they are meeting with their divorce attorney’s to figure out a settlement. Katie filed in New York because she wants full custody of their six-year old daughter Suri. Tom tried to file in California, where he would stand a better chance of getting joint custody, but that bid was rejected.

The couple began the divorce proceedings on Saturday. They are hoping to negotiate a settlement to avoid court appearances and the media circus. Tom wants to make sure that he doesn’t get screwed over in the custody deal. He is requesting that he get ‘meaningful, significant contact with his daughter’.

Tom’s lawyer says that they are allowing Katie to ‘play the media until she wears everyone out’ and then they will have something to say.

Some reports claim that Katie decided to leave her marriage because she didn’t want Suri to be raised in Scientology and she has since been followed by members of the church. Others are saying that the church wants to make sure that their divorce remains private.
