Weekend Box Office: EXPENDABLES #2 is #1—not too shabby for a bunch of old guys!
Written by Russ Francis+
The Expendables 2 topped the box office, beating The Bourne Legacy! This is an unbelievable accomplishment for arthritic old men with matching shoulder surgeries. Although the $28 million that Sly Stallone and his slew of ageless action heroes pulled in—will surely afford them plenty of Viagra refills—the sequel’s debut weekend is down versus the original Expendables in 2010, which earned $34 million during its opening weekend.
The Bourne Legacy took 2nd place and $17 million, beating the premiering ParaNorman, which brought in $14 million and the bronze box office medal. The second leg of The Campaign came in 4th place with $13 million worth of new votes. The debut of Whitney Houston’s final film — Sparkle — earned a sparkling $12 million, but finished in a not so sparkly 5th place.
Below are the Top 5 box office performers this weekend:
1- The Expendables 2* raked in $28 million in its opening weekend.
2- The Bourne Legacy earned $17 million ($69 million total during its first 2-weeks).
3- ParaNorman* produced $14 million in its premiere weekend.
4- The Campaign got $13 million worth of new votes ($52 million in The Campaign’s first 2-weeks).
5- Sparkle* garnered bling bling of $12 million.
