Weekend Box Office: Saddest earnings in 5 years—what’s the problem?

Written by +

Some are saying it’s football’s fault… while others are crying: Don’t blame it on the game! Just make some better movies!

But, numbers don’t lie and Box Office numbers haven’t been so low ($51.9 million total) since this same weekend in 2008 ($50.3 mill). Back then movies like AmusementRighteous Kill and The Women debuted…never heard of them? EXACTLY.

Regardless, here’s how things went down this weekend… The Possession took over the box office again and was followed by an unruly group of guys AKA Lawless—the two films held the top 2 spots for the second straight week. The No. 3 spot was filled by The Words, which debuted to a pathetic $5 million dollars despite CBS Films throwing down a nice chunk of change on marketing—there are no words to describe CBS’ disappointment.

Below are the Top 5 box office performers this weekend:

1-  The Possession devoured another $9.5 million (earning a total of $33 million during its first two weeks out).

2- Lawless snatched another $6 million (since these bad boys hit theaters two weeks ago, a total of $23.5 million has gone missing from patrons’ wallets).

3-  Words* debuted to a sad 5-million-buckaroos.

4- The Expendables 2 muscled in another $4.8 million (bringing Sly’s total up to $75 million over its 4 week run in theaters).

5-  The Bourne Legacy takes home $4 million this weekend ($104 million for its 5-week total).
