Jessica Chastain continues to work hard to recover the loss of reputation redheads have suffered at the hands of Lindsay Lohan. BOTH films that Jessica stars in—Mama and Zero Dark Thirty—claim the TOP TWO box office spots this weekend.
Mama, a supernatural thriller about two little girls who have been possessed, is sure to deter some folks from ever having children, but it definitely didn’t deter moviegoers from coming out in droves; it was #1 and made $28 mill.
The Arnold Schwarzenegger/Johnny Knoxville cop-flop, The Last Stand, debuted at #10 and earned a stingy $6 mill. We opened our wallets a little wider for the Mark Wahlberg/Russell Crowe political thriller Broken City, which debuted at #5 with $9 million.
Below are the Top 5 box office performers this weekend:
1- Mama* makes $28 million in its premiere weekend.
2- Zero Dark Thirty scores $28 million ($56 million total for 5 weeks; only 2 of which were wide release).
3- Silver Linings Playbook brings in another $11 million ($55 million total for 10 weeks).
4- Gangster Squad earns $9 million ($32 million total for 2-weeks).
5- Broken City* debuts with $9 million.
