Roger Ebert, famous for rating movies with a thumbs up or thumbs down, passed away on Thursday.
Roger had health problems since 2002. He had operations for cancer of the thyroid, salivary glands and chin, losing his ability to eat, drink and speak. He continued to review movies, write blogs and share his thoughts on Twitter.
Just two days ago, he announced that his cancer had returned.
Roger’s wife of 20 years, Chaz Ebert, said that it was painless. She said, “We were getting ready to go home today for hospice care, when he looked at us, smiled, and passed away. No struggle, no pain, just a quiet, dignified transition.
Roger is survived by his wife, stepchildren, Sonia and Jay, and grandkids, Raven, Emil, Mark and Joseph, Roger.
Roger’s movie partner, Gene Siskel, passed away in 1999 at the age of 53.
